Sept 6 – Sept 20 – Quarterly Food Drive – Backpack Buddies

Sept 6 through Sept 20

BackPack Buddies is not a school supply program or a backpack donation program. Rather, BackPack Buddies fights Child Hunger here in Cleveland Community schools by providing children from food-insecure homes with healthy weekend meals during the school year. The children, selected by school principals, guidance counselors, and supervisors of various after school programs, receive a backpack containing six balanced meals and two healthy snacks at the end of every week.

“When asking a 1st grade student what type of food he ate on the weekend, he replied ‘oh… we don’t eat on the weekend.’  When I asked him if he would like to be a ‘BackPack Buddy’ and explained the program to him, he started jumping up and down with an excited look on his face and exclaimed ‘YES, YES, YES!”

“Toward the end of the year last year, the day before we delivered backpacks, a third-grade student mentioned to her teacher that she was hungry because she and her brother and her mother had to share one apple for breakfast that morning, and they were hungry – they were out of food. And the next day I delivered that bag of food to her classroom, and the teacher said that child lit up like a Christmas tree, she was so excited to see that food. That tells you that you’re making a difference right there.”
